1928.

The building now operating as The Merredin Treasury at 30 Bates Street, was opened on the 31 July 1928 as the English Scottish and Australian Bank. WWII forced the closure of the bank in 1941. Following the closure it reverted to a doctors surgery and residence for many years and at one stage was leased by Hendy Cowan, former deputy premier of Western Australia.

In the 1920’s, Merredin was prosperous and expanding. Farming seasons were good and banks were established to cater for the financial needs of the community. The building was designed by Summerhayes Architects, renowned for the design of many bank buildings during this era. To this day, the original corbels and front facade decoration are a unique and symbolic distinguishing feature of this building. The front facade of the building has architectural significance, being
constructed at a time when there was confidence in the future of Merredin.

The building begun operation as Merredin BnB in 2007. In 2022, the building changed hands and The Merredin Treasury was born. This property is rich in history, detail and elegance of a bygone era, combined with modern day comforts.
